"Dusty Ventures" (dustyventures)

So last month after competing in the Lake Superior Performance Rally I flew out to the Pacific Northwest to do a story on an absolutely insane rally car (story hopefully to be finished by the end of next week). Here's a piece of the onboard footage from my ride-along. The driver (a masterful professional if ever there was one) was, by his standards, taking it easy, but I still saw speeds go over 100 on a few occasions. Any guesses what the car is?

Fiesta R2?
Unrelated: I really enjoyed your side-by-side post a bit ago. It was awesome. Can we expect more?

Any idea which side-by-side it was? I've done a couple. And not a Fiesta

It was a crucial race, and there was a difficult catch-up that was needed on your part. There may, or may not have been a female in the other car. Success was had!

Ah, that one. The other car was my driver's mom. Passing her on stage was purely a bragging rights thing, she's in a different class, but man was it fun.

The only way those can hit 100 is if we're speaking in kilometers. And even then they need a downhill ;)

Nope. Not the SEMA Camry. Despite appearances that Camry is not meant for gravel.

Stef Schrader

LIES. Truck nuts are mandatory in the Pacific Northwest.
RS4 Avant?! If so, I will go up that more and claim it in the name of TexMexistan* and drive that sucker home.
*that country that gets formed where I secede over not being able to buy the RS4 Avant
Dusty Ventures

11/10/2013 at 02:25 | 0 |
I actually don't recall seeing anyone with truck nuts. But I was within an hour of Portland most of the time so it was mostly crunchy granola people with Foresters.
Not an RS4 Avant. When you secede and create TexMexistan can I apply for citizenship? Also can we somehow find a way to claim the Baja peninsula and COTA?
Stef Schrader

11/10/2013 at 02:35 | 0 |
Yes. I'm taking Harris Hill, too. Actually, I'm pretty sure their couch is the capital.
No RS4 Avant? Hmm. Well, it's not Jeff Zwart's Pikes Peak car, is it? I don't hear enough BOV goodness, but whatever. HHHHNNNNGGGGG. I'll be in my bunk.

I was wondering how long it would take for you to make a Porsche-based inquiry. It isn't Zwart's car, but it is now my goal to get a ride in it before you do. Because dibs.

For a while there I thought you'd foiled my theory that every car ever built has at some point been rallied by someone somewhere. But success! I found a 1954 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight rally car!
Stef Schrader

And this is why La Carrera Panamericana = epic win.
Feh. I'm out of interesting ideas. Is it really a dang Subaru? Because bringing a Subaru to a rally event is pretty much like inviting the Engineering/Comp Sci dorm to the SausageFest.
Dusty Ventures
> Stef Schrader
11/11/2013 at 13:34 | 0 |
Quitter.
It's really not a Subaru. Also here's the inside skinny on why everyone races Subarus: 1) Subaru still pays contingency monies, 2) the spectator parking lot is full of spare parts and the fanboys are always excited to give up a caliper or a transmission to the cause, and 3) the one good Mitsubishi engine builder in the US took his ball and went home. Ever since then the Mitsu field has been having reliability issues.

Yeah, yeah. Same reason why every track in existence has been struck with the Miata plague: awesome manufacturer support.

Speaking of Bacon, is this car powered by it? Like, say, a certain sweet tube frame Mazda6 that's now been jacked up like a monster truck?
Dusty Ventures
> Stef Schrader
11/11/2013 at 21:39 | 0 |
Well technically Bacon adds 40 horsepower to any car he's in, so they're all at least partially powered by Bacon. But no. This particular rally car isn't a Mazda6 and most definitely isn't jacked up. If anything it's lower than most.
